Comprehensive Blood Chemistry

Blood chemistries are the most widely accepted measure of your body's status in all of healthcare. How you interpret your world through your eyes is, in part, dependent on the linkages between your brain and the rest of your body. It is important to note that your eye  directly connects via the optic nerve to your brain and is considered physically the most forward extension of your brain. The eye-brain connection is intimately connected to what is going on in the rest of your body.

It makes a great deal of sense to evaluate and address functional disturbances in your body because of a simple rule:

If you are stressed in body, mind or spirit, your visual perception shrinks or hypersensitizes.

In other words, you are more likely to be uncomfortable in a crowded place or miss details of your visual environment if your internal chemistry is imbalanced. The healthier you are, the more likely you will have large ranges of tolerance and comfort in your visual processing.

Blood chemistries are a way of looking at the balance of your internal chemistry.

Our office uses Lab Corp for a variety of reasons. They are convenient with many draw stations throughout the Denver Metro area and provide quick results within 3-4 days.

Many medical doctors do routine blood chemistries, however they often fall short of being comprehensive. They are looking for the presence of a disease. We are not.  We are looking for functional imbalances.

What is a functional imbalance?

This is where the bio markers in your blood are outside optimal ranges but not enough outside to be considered a disease. In other words your lab values fall within the "normal "  lab range.  However, lab ranges are determined by the people in a given area that submit their blood over a given time period. Do you think that the majority of people submitting their blood for analysis are sick or healthy?  This is why the ranges for lab values are so wide and  why it is relatively easy for you have a  disturbance in your physiology but still be "in the normal range".  Normal for whom?

In a typical medical office you would be told that you are fine because your lab values are in the normal range and because they are experts at disease detection and management, nothing is done.

We are interested in how your body functions. It is beyond our scope to look at disease detection or management. And if we do see lab values that are out of range, we always refer you back to your primary care physician, the expert in disease detection and management, for additional consultation.

Since we are looking at optimal eye-brain connections, we are interested in imbalances in the body chemistry that can affect it. For instance, high blood sugar can directly damage the tiny blood vessels in the eye and age the brain quite rapidly. Low blood sugar can also be a problem as there is not enough fuel for  proper functioning of the eye and brain.

Different types of anemias can also affect the blood's ability to carry oxygen to the brain and eye.

These are important because all tissues and especially high metabolism tissues like the eye and brain need oxygen and fuel in the right amounts.

It is best not to guess at this, you have to have the data to rule out functional imbalances affecting your  eye and brain. Comprehensive blood chemistries are a necessary step in identifying functional imbalances.

Salivary Hormone Tests

The pathway to health has to include some assessment of a your hormone systems as their imbalance has such wide ranging effects. Low thyroid hormones can be an important precursor to brain degeneration. Too much cortisol, the stress hormone, can damage the regulatory centers of the brain including short term memory.

In keeping with our theme of the the more stressed your body is, the less likely it is to have comfortable visual processing through the eye-brain connection, it is important to consider your hormone status.

To efficiently process information visually, you must have some basic requirements. One of these is a normal tear film.

The tears coat the front surface of the eye allowing for a stable image to be formed on the retina which then can be processed by the brain. There are important relationships between estrogen and the tear film, another reason to consider hormone assessment.

Salivary hormone assessment have some important advantages over serum testing.

- easy to do multiple samples in a day for cortisol testing
- can be done in the privacy of your own home
- less expensive than blood testing
- measures the free fraction portion of the hormone which is the active part
- very high correlations with the blood based hormones

Advanced Food Sensitivity Testing

When you eat a food that your immune system is not compatible with, it can unbalance your internal body chemistry. This can be noticed by you in terms of a symptom like a rash or have no symptoms at all. The latter is more problematic because you have a hard time associating a food you eat with any negative health effects.

We want to concentrate on food sensitivities not food allergies because sensitivities are more subtle and potentially more health imbalancing.

Because gut inflammation can produce chemical messengers that create obvious brain symptoms like fog, fatigue, and sluggishness, it is important to figure out what foods inflame your gut. It is also important to know that the chemical messengers from your gut to your brain can be silent for a long time but produce imbalances that form the foundation for auto immune reactions to your cerebellum(the part of your brain responsible for cooordinated movement)  and dementias.

There are many food testing labs on the market. Over the last 10 years we have tried many of them and have selected the top three based on their meticulous approach and their proven techniques.

Although the rise in gluten awareness in the general American public may seem to be a fad, It is not. There are some serious effects of eating  gluten rich diet for the susceptible individual. These effects do not always show up with immediate symptoms that you can relate to your gut. There are many symptoms that show gluten intolerance that are not related to digestive complaints. Gluten intolerance can manifest in other ways such as learning difficulties, skin disturbances, .....

Bottom line, food sensitivity testing can give you some direction in your food choices. When you have this right, you have eliminated a powerful disrupter of brain function, thus enhancing the eye-brain connection.

Leaky Gut and MicroBiome Testing

The walls of your small intestine should only allow food that had been fully digested into the individual components of fats, proteins, and carbs into the blood stream. your immune system recognizes this as normal. Whenthe the intestinal tract is irritated and inflamed, spaces open up between the cells lining the intestinal tract and allow undigested food to "leak" into the bloodstream. This creates internal havoc! Your immune system makes antibodies to the leaky part of the intestine and the products that leak out. This creates a cycle of inflammatory chemical messengers affect your brain and  sets the stage for all sorts of problems in your body.

Since we are interested in how your eye-brain connection can be impaired by the imbalance of your internal chemistry, this is an important player.

Testing can identify if there are elevated antibody amounts to the proteins that bind the intestinal cells together. If there are elevations, this means that your immune system has been exposed to these proteins via breaches in the intestinal wall. Thus you can identify a leaky gut by measuring the antibody response to a protein that binds the intestinal cells together that the immune system should not  be exposed to.

What causes a leaky gut?

Mostly inappropriate foods, environmental chemicals and microorganisms.

Leaky gut testing can identify the degree to which you have intestinal permeability and also whether or not bacterial microoganisms are involved. This is important as it shapes the foundation of the therapy to fix it.

You wouldn't want to neccessarily work on the balance of microorganisms in your gut if the main reason for intestinal permeability was inflammatory foods.

Gut microbiome testing has risen in popularity in the past few years. Given the sheer numbers and incredible influences on our physiology it is an important determiner of gut, body and brain health.

The mix of bacteria and other microorganisms in your gut can determine gut inflammation which lays the foundation for diease or health.

Nutritional Counseling and Dietary analysis

I have been a certified nutritionist for 18 years and have found some simple rules that help most people with food choices.
Usually, an hour review of your current dietary choices via a food diary and the education about how foods affect your metabolism is a great start to making the best choices for you to achieve the wellness you so richly deserve.

Changing how you eat is not easy because there are so many other considerations that come into play when making food choices. Things like convenience, lack of knowledge, cultural and emotional states often supercede nutritional considerations when it comes to what to select to eat.

Your food choices are critical to the balance of your internal chemistry, and as such, profoundly affects your eye-brain connection.

GDV Analysis

GDV stands for Gas Discharge Visualization. It is a way to look at the energy emissions from your finger as it is placed on a glass plate.  An electrostatic charge is applied to the plate and a sophisticated camera takes a picture of the glow around your fingers and sends it to a computer for analysis.

Each finger is correlated with a part of your body and we can see energetic disturbances in the finger pictures that correlate with physical disturbances in the body.

This technology is over 20 years old and was first developed in Russia by Konstatin Karatkov.

GDV stands for Gas Discharge Visualization. You put your fingers on a glass plate and a micro current is applied to plate.  The resulting interaction is captured by a specialized camera and processed through several sophisticated computer algorithms.

This can show where there are areas of energy deficiency and also areas where there is more than the normal amount of energy. These areas of your fingers are correlated with the parts of your body.

Deficiencies or excesses in the energy readings precede or are highly correlated to current physical problems in those body locations.

The benefit of this is to look at which parts of your body are under stress and make adjustments in your lifestyle or your emotional responses so as to change the physical manifestation of those stressors that result in illness.

In addition, it is a marvelous way to see if the therapies that one chooses are having the desired effect on the energy of the targeted areas of the body.
